El Salvador Woman Describes the Terror and Tragedy of Being Jailed for Her Miscarriage

In 2012 in El Salvador, Maria Teresa Rivera was convicted of aggravated homicide and sentenced to 40 years in prison after her miscarriage. A judge overturned her conviction in May of this year, but prosecutors have appealed this decision. Rivera is part of a group of women known as Las 17, all of whom were convicted and imprisoned after obstetrical emergencies under El Salvador’s total abortion ban. In this short video, Rivera speaks about her terrifying experiences and what kept her going in her darkest moments in prison.
