Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, Inc. v. Reynolds

Planned Parenthood Federation of American and the ACLU of Iowa filed a lawsuit in state court on behalf of several abortion providers challenging  SF 359, Iowa’s heartbeat ban legislation which would ban most abortions at around six weeks—before many women even know they’re pregnant.

On June 1, 2018, Polk County District Court Judge Michael Huppert granted a temporary injunction stopping the law from being enforced while the lawsuit works its way through the courts.

On January 22, 2019, Judge Huppert issued a permanent injunction, ruling that the law violates Iowa’s constitution because it bans abortion well in advance of fetal viability.
