Nebraska Anti-Discrimination Bill (LB 485)

LB 485 would have prohibited employment discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or marital status. This bill would have added “sexual orientation” and “marital status” to the current codified list of race, color, religion, sex, disability and national origin as categories on the basis of which any employer decision deemed to be discriminatory would be an unlawful employment practice under the Nebraska Fair Employment Practices Act.
LB 485 would have applied to all public employers, government contractors and private employers with 15 or more employees. The Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission would have been authorized to impose fines and penalties for unlawful employment practices.
The bill would also have added “sexual orientation” to the law that directs state governments to take affirmative action to promote equal employment opportunities.
LB 385 was referred to the Judiciary Committee. The bill was indefinitely postponed on April 17th, 2014.
