Washington Bill Regarding Gender Segregated Facilities (SB 6548)
This law was last updated on Jun 2, 2016
SB 6548 would amend the Washington Law Against Discrimination to include a new exemption that allows a public or private entity to limit access to a private facility segregated by gender, such as a bathroom, restroom, toilet, shower, locker room, or sauna, to a person if the person is preoperative, nonoperative, or otherwise has genitalia of a different gender from that for which the facility is segregated.
The bill would allow an exception for a minor child or person with a disability if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is the same gender for which the facility is segregated.
The bill is in response to new rules enacted by the Human Rights Commission, allowing trans people to use bathrooms based on their gender identity or gender expression.
Identical to HB 2589.
