H.R. 3829 would prevent the federal government from asserting its own definition of “marriage” and “spouse” on the states.

The bill would require the federal government to follow the law of a person’s legal residence in order to determine their marriage status.

The bill would effectively nullify the marriage of same-sex couples who married in one state and moved to another state where such unions were illegal.
