HB 53 would require physicians who prescribe the abortion pill to inform their patients that it’s possible to “reverse” the effects of medication abortion.

Immediately after administering Mifepristone (the first step of a medication abortion), a physician would be required to furnish the patient with written materials designed to inform the pregnant person about the possibility of reversing a medication abortion. The materials would include the following information:

This information about your drug-induced abortion is provided by the State of North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. It may be possible to discontinue a drug-induced abortion by not taking the second drug (Misopristol) and to reverse the process by administration of progesterone. It is recommended that you contact a knowledgeable health care provider regarding the abortion pill reversal process or call the Abortion Pill Reversal Hotline at 877-558-0333 as soon as possible.

The pregnant patient would need to certify in writing that they received the information.

The bill would require the state department of health and human services to provide the same information on the department’s website. The information includes contact information for the Abortion Pill Reversal hotline, a program of Culture of Life Family Services.
