HB 513 would have amended Mississippi’s abstinence-only sexual education law, Miss. Code § 37-13-171 required the local school board of every public school district to adopt a policy to implement abstinence-only or abstinence-plus education into its curriculum.

The law states: “There shall be no effort in either an abstinence-only or an abstinence-plus curriculum to teach that abortion can be used to prevent the birth of a baby. Any discussion of abortion must be presented from the medical perspective of the potential long-term and short-term hazards presented to patients as the result of having the procedure performed.”
