HB 6524 would require transgender inmates who receive gender reassignment surgery to pay for the entire cost of the treatment.
According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, all prisoners in Correctional Facilities Administration (CFA) institutions should have access to medically-necessary health services. People in state prison who receive non-emergency medical, dental, or optometric services at his or her request are responsible for a copayment fee—typically $5 per visit— to the Department of Corrections.
