Georgia ‘Personhood’ Amendment (SR 420)
This law was last updated on Apr 22, 2016
SR 420 is a legislatively-referred ballot initiative that would amend the Georgia Constitution to “recognize the paramount right to life of all human beings as persons at any stage of development,” and would give constitutional rights to eggs, embryos, and fetuses.
This amendment would ban abortion, birth control pills, IUDs, and emergency contraception. In addition, it would eliminate certain medical choices for women, including some cancer treatments, in vitro fertilization, and might lead to investigation and prosecution of women who miscarry to determine if their own actions caused the death.
This ballot initiative would have put a “personhood” amendment on the ballot in November 2014, but it died in committee.
