Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis is preparing to announce a run for governor next week, according to news outlets that have spoken with anonymous, high-ranking Democratic sources who say they’ve been “coming away from conversations with Davis saying that she intends to run for governor next year.” That’s the word from the Dallas Morning News, and Reuters reports confirming her run with “two influential Democrats with direct knowledge of her plans.”

Davis advised her supporters via email last week that she would make a big announcement on October 3, fueling gubernatorial speculation among Texans who fired up their #StandWithWendy hashtags during her historic filibuster of the Texas legislature in July, when she obstructed the passage of an omnibus anti-abortion bill. That bill, HB 2, did ultimately pass in a following special legislative session, but the filibuster made Davis a national name.

Davis’ spokesman, Hector Nieto, declined to confirm the news to the Forth Worth Star-Telegram, saying only that “Sen. Davis announced last week to her grassroots supporters that she has made a decision and she will announce that decision on Oct. 3.”

The 2014 election in Texas will see the state’s first open gubernatorial seat since 1990; if Davis runs, she will likely challenge Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.
