Usual disclaimer: I don’t care what people do with their sex lives, except when they spend their lives trying to control the sex lives of others through law and policy and then end up engaging in the very things against which they spew fire and brimstone.

And the latest in an increasingly long line of moralizers who hide their involvement in the very thing they moralize against (or who are in their own minds apparently divinely exempt) is Dr. George Rekers, who is a co-founder of the Family Research Council, and according to his own website, ProfessorGeorge.com:

served as one of the multidisciplinary experts for the legal team that successfully defended the state of Florida’s law prohibiting adoption of children by homosexually-behaving individuals all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, in the case Lofton v. Secretary of the Department of Children and Family Services. Dr. Rekers is a past recipient of the NARTH Sigmund Freud Award for his research contributions on child gender identity disorder.

In short, he is a professional gay-bashing, anti-woman, anti-choice crusader affiliated with one of the leading groups in that arena.

Rekers is not just a founder of the FRC, says Pam Spaulding of Pam’s House Blend, writing on this story at Pandagon.  He’s also “on the board of therapize-away-the-gay org National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH).  [H]e’s earned a rep as a class-A homo-hater, according to friend of the Blend Wayne Besen.”

“While he keeps a low public profile, his fingerprints are on almost every anti-gay effort to demean and dehumanize LGBT people,” says Wayne Besen, a gay rights advocate in New York City and the executive director of Truth Wins Out, which investigates the anti-gay movement. “His work is ubiquitously cited by lobby groups that work to deny equality to LGBT Americans. Rekers has caused a great deal of harm to gay and lesbian individuals.”

The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality is one of those discredited groups that believes sexual orientation is a “choice,” and that being gay is a bad one.

Yet, despite Rekers’ apparently stellar credentials, according to Joe.My.God:

he’s already been erased from the FRC’s site, not even 12 hours after the news broke that Dr. James Dobson’s one-time buddy has been having his sack lifted by a barely legal Latino twink. Tony Perkins works fast! Does that sting just a little bit, Doctor? Man overboard!

What happened?

Spaulding also reports at Pandagon that Rekers procured “the talents of Geo…known to most as a “Travel Assistant”/”luggage carrier” through the recruiting service he went through, Rentboy.com.”

Spaulding points out that they must “have a rigorous training program for travel assistants at Rentboy:”

Is there anything more immoral than stigmatizing, ostracizing, and discriminating against people for who they are or the profoundly personal decisions they make in their lives (like say whether and when to bear a child) to do the best for themselves and their families, and then secretly engaging in the very things you supposedly so detest?

Self-hatred must indeed run very deep in the anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-humanity movement.  Denial apparently runs far deeper.
